Gharoa was established in 1991 at Lumding, Assam by some eminent personalities of Railway who were posted in Lumding with a goal to provide need based professional and quality services to the locals. By 1992, it started working on environmental issues with a focus on social forestry and Environment Education among students. Conservation of Environment, RCH, HIV/AIDS, Women Empowerment, Promotion of SHGs, Monitoring of evening OPD, Inculcation of science or scientific spirit among the local consciousness are key thematic areas of work that the organisation currently works for. It provide awareness and promotes community level action concerning right to information, right to food, self help group (SHG) movement, RCH, HIV/AIDS, sustainable agriculture and watershed management. It engages in advocating policies on right to food, community health, tobacco control and gender in development. It provides capacity building trainings and awareness to the FNGO, CBO and SHG of the region regarding community monitoring and maintaining and updating resource centres. It also provides trainings to the farmer for sustainable agriculture. Gharoa through its right based approach seek to achieve the rights of the locals through sustainable livelihood practices, empowering women through micro credit and by making community health a reality.
